What is an AIF?
An Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) is a privately pooled investment vehicle established in India. It collects funds from sophisticated investors—both Indian and foreign—for investing in accordance with a defined investment policy for the benefit of its investors.
While mutual funds primarily invest in publicly traded stocks and bonds, AIFs offer a gateway to non-traditional asset classes. This includes start-ups, early-stage ventures, private equity, infrastructure funds, and complex trading strategies that are typically inaccessible to retail investors.
- Pooled Structure: Like mutual funds, money is pooled together, but it is directed towards alternative, less liquid asset classes.
- Private Markets: Access to unlisted companies, real estate, and venture capital before they hit public markets.
- Longer Lock-ins: Many AIFs are close-ended with multi-year lock-in periods, allowing fund managers to execute long-term strategies.
- Uncorrelated Returns: Potential to generate returns that are not strictly correlated with standard stock market indices.
SEBI AIF Categories
We facilitate distribution across all three SEBI-defined categories of Alternative Investment Funds.
- Venture & Infra Funds: Funds that invest in start-ups, early-stage ventures, social ventures, SMEs, and infrastructure sectors. The government often considers these economically desirable.
- Private Equity & Debt: Funds that do not undertake leverage (borrowing) other than to meet day-to-day operational requirements. This is the most common AIF category.
- Complex Strategies: Funds that employ diverse or complex trading strategies and may employ leverage including through investment in listed or unlisted derivatives.
The "Core & Satellite" Approach
How Mutual Funds and AIFs complement each other in an HNI portfolio.
- The Core: Mutual Funds Mutual funds form the stable foundation of your investment journey. They provide high liquidity, transparency, daily NAVs, and access to the regulated public equity and debt markets.
- The Satellite: AIFs: Once a strong mutual fund foundation is built, AIFs act as a satellite allocation for HNIs. They introduce illiquidity premiums, private market access, and complex strategies to enhance overall portfolio potential.
